The pH Balancing Act

A plant based diet, rich in alkalizing foods is one of the best ways to help achieve and maintain a healthy pH. Potential of hydrogen, or pH indicates the of acidity or alkalinity of a solution, measured on a scale of 0-14. The lower the pH, the more acidic the solution; the higher the pH, the more alkaline a solution. The ideal pH we should try to maintain is right about in the middle of the scale at a 7.

Our bodies are made to be more alkaline but unfortunately, the Standard American Diet (SAD) consists of meats, sugars, dairy, refined and processed foods-the most acid forming types of foods! The book, The pH Balance Diet Restore Your Acid-Alkaline Levels to Eliminate Toxins and Lose Weight, by Bharti Vyas & Suzanne Le Quesne, describes what happens during digestion as this,

“…when we’ve digested them acid-forming foods/drinks, they leave an acidic residue in our bodies. All the foods we eat ‘burns’ with oxygen in our cells to produce energy- our fuel. Furthermore, when there is too much acidic residue in your system your body has to draw from it’s own alkalizing sources, calcium and magnesium. This results in osteoporosis, muscle weakness and deterioration and arthritis. It’s no wonder so many people are plagued with a host of ailments, sickness, inflammation, and excess weight (to name a few)!

In addition to all the internal health benefits a properly pH diet provides, you skin, hair and nails will be a direct reflection of your increased internal health! Not to mention, reduced weight and increased energy. You will truly feel and look your best from the inside out!

For ideal health, it is suggested that our diets should consist of about 80% alkaline forming foods and about 20% acid forming foods- but not just any acid forming foods! They should be acid forming foods that are nutritious and play a role in repairing cells.
